I knew a woman many years ago who had a very sweet son who was about five or six. He was considered a bit odd (inverted and over focused) and in retrospect I imagine that he was probably autistic. He had two things that he loved. He loved Mozart (the person and the musical). And he was fascinated by the clothes washer.

But the wonderful thing that he did was spend hours each day drawing very detailed pictures of Mozart washing his clothes.

Removed the old lime plaster yesterday to reveal beautiful brick arches over the windows of the old stone cottage.

Christ but these lads were gifted craftsmen back in the old days.

Ring beam to go in next and then on to the foundation for the extension.

I presume you are on the case but don't put modern cementitious materials anywhere near those old walls when you are working your way back out again - the lime plaster was there for good reason!

Thanks HonkY, we won't be.

We peeled it back to the stonework to honour it's original appearance.
All the pointing etc will be done exactly as they they did it.

There will be a corridor into the extension built in the exact same stone.

The son in law is on it, he's worked on old castles and buildings in his past life as a builder with his father since he was a kid.

I suppose the best way to explain the project is that it will look like a H from an ariel view when finished.

He won't even consider new slates on the cottage roof as he wants to preserve as much as he can.

I'm really enjoying this HonkY, I think I've fallen in love with this old cottage.

Good man - sounds like the house has new custodians who will do the right thing

Suggest that the consider the link corridor between the old and new bars as a glass element so they remain separate elements visually, would be a nice moment as you pass from one to the other as well and get a glimpse of the landscape (weeds!) either side

Yeah he mentioned something like that because of the square footage allowed. Will have to battle the daughter on that one though lol.

There's a acre of field behind it with every fruit tree and shrub you can imagine in it, so the wall looking out to it will be mostly glass in a large kitchen where she can keep an eye on the kids.
