Was the purpose to get people to stop buying so many bottles/cans or what?

Id say 95% of homes were recycling these items in their bi-weekly recycling bins anyway? Were they saying these items weren't been recycled properly via traditional home recycling?

It's a pain in the hole tbh imho. It just gives people an extra chore to do in their already limited free time.
You already had a monetary incentive to put them in the green bin over the black bin. Now there is an incentive for others to go rooting through your green bin and public bins with the littering that that causes. And you have to load your cans and bottles into your ICE car and start driving around looking for a depot where previously you wheeled your bin to the front gate.

It just strikes me as the classic Green initiative.

Doing something for the sake of doing it. The literature all lists Germany as the success story for doing this. Ignoring that theyve a hefty chunk of municipal waste collection.

It made no sense to implement paid/return fee scheme in a country where waste recycling was almost entirely paid to private companies anyway.

They always trot out the myth that this was researched and driven by experts. When you dig into the CVs of the Greens advisors they are ALL just political flunkies with fuck all experience or qualifications to be doing this. This was a throw a dart at a board policy because they liked the look of it abroad.

Bottom line, besides nuisance and not being needed its significantly driven up EVERYONES annual waste collection charges. Its obscene to do this in cost of living crisis.

Its sitting on enormous cash intake and worst of all is a supposed not for profit that is paying it's directors and wont disclose the pay. Thats not standard practice for non profits.

I dont believe their claims about increased recycling for a minute.

Its a scam, it should never have been introduced in the first place and it should be binned.

I honestly think it was set up with genuine intentions, lets face it Eamonn Ryan and the greens live in a different world from the rest of us, it's all flowers and roses in their world. They didn't take in to consideration the laziness of us and our hatred of being put out.
They visualised happy campers queing around the corner with black bin bags not bins being scavenged and rubbish thrown every where

Household bin charges up 70 euros this year as a direct consequence of this scam

So not only are you having the hassle of taking your rubbish to these cursed machines then you are being hit with extra bin charges on top.

Its telling the only fella here arguing in favour is a fully paid up Fianna Fail member. Ycnmiu.
Do you not recycle?

Not according to the official figures.

What were they doing with their empties so?
Putting them into the rubbish bin. The reality is that people need to be cajoled into making environmentally friendly choices, myself included.

On a broader point I think it’s a bit silly to be claiming that returning bottles is such a hardship. Maybe we are drinking too much soft drinks as a nation. I bring my young lad with me to Dunnes and he loves helping me return the cans and bottles.

Nah it's a pain in the hole tbh. It was so much more convenient to just put them in our domestic recycling bin.
