It is always a fascinating discussion on whether the IRA or Army Council have ceased to exist.
On one side you have the PSNI and Gardai etc saying they still exist and operate although in a smaller capacity and on other side you have Sinn Fein online activists saying they are gone away.
Who to believe?

I also thought it very interesting when it was 2 women that were put forward as leader and deputy leader of Scum Fein.

Let's call it, SF/PIRA failed in their terrorist campaign to get the British out of the North.
Yet they have the audacity to consider themselves anything like the IRA that managed to get the British out of the Republic of Ireland.

Anyway I digress, Jarry steps aside and women are put into place. It does not take a genius to work out that the Army Council wanted to make Scum Fein seem like a cuddly version of what they are.
Its still ran by that Army Council as can be seen from that funeral the Scum went to during Covid despite the crowd rules at the time.

Do they ever distinguish between PIRA/OIRA/CIRA/etc?

Or does it just suit their purpose to lump them all under the one IRA umbrella despite the fact that some of them are sworn enemies of others?

Politically it suits to give the notion that PIRA and PIRA Army Council exists. I'm amazed that they do to be honest. Not that I don't trust you but can you put up a link where they say PIRA and/or their Army Council still exist. They're about as relevant today as a walkman casette recorder.

I did google it and got the following

Yes, the Provisional IRA (PIRA) officially exists as an organization, though it has decommissioned its weapons, ended its armed campaign, and transitioned into a civilian capacity.

So the guys who used be in the (P)IRA, didn't all die as soon as the GFA was signed, they transitioned into a civilian capacity. And their leaders, that were in the Army Council, similarly didn't all die off in 1998. No more than the guys running Fianna Fail or Fine Gael died off in 1998. There's still probably a few of them involved - if they wanted to be - but those that haven't died since are well into their 70s now so it's a bit of a moot point as to how active they actually are.

There's no threatening Army Council as such (it's an old boys club with bonds forged at a time of great stress and pressure so it's unsurprising that they might still occasionally meet to natter about old times), unless you think the Salvation Army Council is something that we should all be wary of in case they kick off.
