Pubs reopening June 29th

The Gables has cards every Sunday night and they have a dart board which is used by some local darts league, but anyone can go in and play as long as its quiet.

Here's one for you SoundY. City centre pubs that you wouldn't drink in if you were paid to

For me the obvious ones would be (in no particular order) -

The RoundY
Fionbarras
Reardans
Deep South
The Woodford

I drank in all of them in the past. Quite like Fionbarras in the front as it happens. Have been on work nights out in Reardens, Deep South, and The Woodford. The Roundy seems to be more of a "sidewalk café" than a pub these days. Not been in there in a while but if you're paying me to drink there just name the day ;)

I'd never not drink in any place if only to ease my curiosity to be honest. Can't think of anywhere in the city I've not had pints. Whether I'd continue to have pints there on a regular basis or not would depend on a number of factors including
Quality of fellow patrons
Quality of bar staff
Quality of pint
Price of pint
Comfort of surrounding
Convenience

Very very few would get top marks in all categories but you've gotta give each place a chance to impress ;)

Interesting. I've always had a strong affinity to The RoundY (great people watching, nice selection of draught beers, one of the cheapest pints in town) albeit never a night time visitor. Fionbarras, I've been in once for pints and a pizza. It was OK, had a decent chat with the barstaff. What is it about these 2 bars that you don't like MOE? The other 3 places are kips, that I do agree on.

Callanan's would be near the top of my list. Awful kip, bang average pints, frequented by weirdos.

Probably THE most over-rated pub in the city imho.

I don't think there's a better pub pizza in Cork than FB's tbh. And before anyone mentions Fran Well, they're shite imo.

Used go to the Well (as we knew it) most Fridays back in the day. Loved the place but when Frank moved to pastures new it was never the same.

Was back there for a few events over the last couple of years and while I'd only trust the Stonewell in there, I actually liked their pizza.

But as I say it was events night and I wouldn't usually be one to eat pizzas while out for a few sociable pints so I don't usually bother with the place.

Wouldn't put the demise of bars down to as long ago as 88 tbh.

People generally tend not to play cards any more. When I was a kid someone had a ball and we all gathered around and played and learnt by osmosis how to socialise and interact with others. If I was to put the demise down to technology it wouldn't be big TV screens in the late 80s it would be XBoxs or whatever they were called back when they came in. People don't interact much with each other any more.

When I was a kid we knew the names of every family in our park and the park next door. Today my kids wouldn't know the names of other families in our park. It's just the way society has drifted.

And the lack of interaction means that there's a lack of social skills. So people would now feel more comfortable playing pool against some computer rather than the real thing. And lord knows it's a hell of a lot cheaper. Even down in the wilds of kirry they're charging 2 Euro a game!
When i get the train from midleton as soon as people get on they immediately log on to the wifi and scroll away, I do sometimes wonder if they do so to avoid chatting to me?
