A Resort Full of Langers

De Langer Resort
Comrade Ronan Goggin
On fairly remote island called Kecil, which is part of the Pyrenthean group of islands off the coast of Malaysia, not far across the border of southern Thailand and Malaysia.
A 25-ft little speed boat made the half-hour journey from the mainland to the island, and on our approach, I saw a tiny secluded beach further up the coastline from the main resort. Next morning, I undertook a little hike, up along the coastline to seek out this beach.
There were no obvious pathways to connect the places, the jungled terrain steeped quickly upwards from the shore, making it a very difficult expedition. But I trudged fearlessly over rocks along the shoreline, in search of this beach.
Forty-five minutes into the journey I realised the bolders had become so big, and the waves so threatening, that I would fail to reach my beach by a matter of 50 feet. Nevertheless, I had come across a deserted resort along the way - consisting of a main hut and three or four other guest bungalows - that had obviously been left to rot for quite some time.
Apparently, an efficient water supply is crucial to the survival of any resort on these islands, and if a resort is unfortunate enough to have been constructed on a site that lacks natural spring water, then it's in big trouble. Alas, 'de Langir resort' was sitting there empty, abandoned and useless, but as a langer, of course I was grateful to stumble upon it.
Travel thousands of miles to find a resort full of langers?! No wonder this place closed down. |
