Cork had lost very few championship matches in the past 3 years but they hadn't achieve the ultimate prize and the most recent defeat, losing to Kerry in 2009 final, was still a motivating memory.

The ‘Rebels’ had already won the 2010 League title in April but the championship campaign started badly as Kerry won out in their Munster clash. So it was the back-door route and despite some below par performances in the qualifiers Conor Counihan’s men justly deserved their spot after a thrilling semi-final win over Dublin.

. Down also suffered an early stage exit in the Ulster championship, losing out to 2008 champions Tyrone. But under new manager, the legendry James McCartan, the ‘Mourne Men’ then made impressive strides through the qualifiers, toppling champions Kerry and high flying Kildare along the way. With wins like that behind them confidence in the Down camp was high and the proud record of having never lost an All Ireland final in 5 previous appearances was further raising expectations.

. So for the first time two ‘qualifiers’ emerged to take centre stage on final day - would it be Cork taking their 7th title or could Down make it 6 from 6?

Christy Ring (1964) & Peil (1962)

• Comprising two Louis Marcus films, Christy Ring (1964) and Peil (1962), the DVD features the sporting greats of the 1960s in both hurling and football. Additional material consists of evocative Amharc Éireann newsreel footage of major Gaelic games from the years 1959 to 1963.
• Each film has an instructional section at its core, preceded by a nostalgic look back at the past, followed by extended highlights of a major game. Both films feature colour footage from games rich in atmosphere and detail, accompanied by a rousing soundtrack of music from the Artane Band.

Christy Ring (1964)
The film Christy Ring features sequences from the 1954 All-Ireland when Christy made history by winning his eighth All-Ireland medal.

Christy then gives detailed coaching tips in the film which will be of great interest to young players and fans alike. There is extensive coverage in colour of the 1960 National League Final between Cork and Tipperary where Christy displays his prowess.

Peil (1962)
In this film, in order to demonstrate gaelic football skills, a cross-section of the best players from the top teams was chosen.

• Seán Purcell and Frank Stockwell (Galway). Of Purcell, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has written ‘the finest footballer I have ever seen…a total master in all the kills of the game’.
• Kevin Heffernan (Dublin) who captained the victorious All-Ireland Dublin team of 1958 against Derry, their first such win in sixteen years.
• Greg Hughes (Offaly) who captained the Leinster side which won the Railway Cup Final in the 1962
• Seán O’Neill and Leo Murphy (Down), members of the legendary Down team which won the All Ireland in1960 and again in 1961. Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh has said ‘The 1960-61 team ranks with the best of all time.’
• Kevin Beahan (Louth), football hero who played on the victorious All-Ireland Louth 1957 team.

The filming of the 1960 All-Ireland Football Final for Peil was the first time that all the scores in a match were captured on film and many sequences of that epic Down-Kerry encounter feature in Peil.

Amharc Éireann Newsreel Footage
As a bonus, this DVD also features almost 90 minutes of rare newsreel footage of major hurling and football games from the years 1959 to 1963. In hurling, the principal teams of the time were: Waterford, Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary and Dublin.

In football, Down came through to win the first All-Ireland for the North in 1960 and again in the following year. During this period the county teams to the fore in football were: Galway, Offaly, Kerry, Roscommon and Dublin.
