Ón bhFionnlainn do roinnt baill an bhanna, mar sin bíonn ceol Lochlannach le chloisint ó na Polkadots, ach de bharr gur ó thíortha is cúlra dhifriúla iad na baill, seinntear ceol giofógach ó Oirthear Eorpa, ó Mheiriceá Theas, ón Rúis agus ón dTuirc.

‘Sí Marja Gaynor, an sár bheidhleadóir Fionnlannach, ceannaire an ghrúpa seo a thógann sinn ar thuras cheolmhar ar fud an domhain. Chomh maith le ceol úirlise, cuireann siad amhráin bhinn agus anam amhráin ón Mhacadóin, ón mBulgáir agus ón bhFionnlainn in ár láthair.

Is ar an mbosca a sheinneann Piia Pakarinen, duine de bhunaitheoirí an bhanna; cumadóir iseadh í freisin agus tá roinnt dá ceol ar an ndlúthdhiosca “Join the Dots”.

Fear amháin atá sa bhanna, George Norman, ilcheoltóir é ó Georgia S.A.M. a thugann blas Meiriceá Theas i láthair le tangóanna agus luasc cheoil ar a mhandoblaistéir cúig téad maraon le ceol spleodrach aonair ar an mandoline fuaimiúil.

Duine eile den bhanna iseadh an bheidhleadóir Cat O’Hora gur snagcheolaí í freisin, agus canann sí amhráin thaibhseacha ó Oir Euraip. Duine eile fós sa bhanna iseadh an giotáirí Eileen Healy len a rithim láidir giotáir agus armóiní gutha.

Chualathas na Polksdots ag mórán Féiltí mar Aonoch Fidil Dún na Séad, Féile Cultúr Eorpach Béal Feirste agus Féile Ceol Domhanda Dhún Laoghaire.

The Polskadots are a world music band based in Cork City. Strongly influenced by the Finnish members of the band the Polskadots play many a Scandinavian tune but because of the diverse nationalities and backgrounds of the musicians they also share a love for gypsy music from Eastern Europe, South America, Russia and Turkey.

Led by the highly accomplished and energetic Finnish violinist Marja Gaynor they take their audiences on a musical journey around the world.

As well as instrumentals they incorporate sweet and soulful songs from Macedonia, Bulgaria and Finland. Finnish box player, Piia Pakarinen, a founder member of the Dots is also a great composer and her tunes feature on their CD 'Join The Dots'.

The token male in the band is the very versatile George Norman from Georgia, US who adds the South American flavour with tangos and swing tunes on his 5 string mandoblaster plus mind blowing solos on acoustic mandolin.

Cork violinist, Cat O'Hora is also the percussionist in the band plus sings haunting Eastern European songs. Guitarist and singer Eileen Healy completes the line up with strong rhythm guitar and vocal harmonies.

The Polskadots have played at many festivals including the Baltimore Fiddle Fair, Belfast European Culture Fest and the Dun Laoghaire World Music Fest.

Club Daon-Phoblacht is a monthly Irish language night for anybody with any interest in the language. From fluent gaelgóirs to those trying out the cúpla focal - everyone is welcome!
