Cork City Win League
30th Oct 2011
Cork City 2 Shels 1 - League Champions!
A last-minute winner from Graham Cummins saw Cork City crowned First Division champions on a dramatic night at Tolka Park.
Shelbourne, who were already promoted, looked like they would hold out to lift the trophy.
But Cork, even though the draw would have seen them up anyway, pressed until the end and got their reward in the fourth minute of added time.
Graham Cummins who scored the winner |
Substitute Derek O’Brien beat his man on the left wing to cross and Cummins, who had been quiet throughout much of the game, beat Dean Delaney with a downward header for his 23rd goal of the season.
Cork delighted their big following in the 3,277 crowd to take the lead on four minutes. Neal Horgan’s cross into the Shels area wasn’t cleared and Daryl Horgan drilled the ball home from 16 yards.
Shels settled and soon responded to deservedly equalise on 27 minutes. Philly Hughes pounced on a mistake to put skipper David Cassidy in to score with a coolly taken goal from a tight angle.
