Cork Oxfam Shop Seeks Volunteers

Cork City Volunteer Week

.... takes place from the 5th - 11th April 2010.

The event is organised by the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Dara Murphy to say 'thank you' to volunteers, to acknowledge the tremendous contribution volunteers make to our community, to highlight good volunteering practice and to enable voluntary and community groups the opportunity to recruit a new generation of volunteers.

Oxfam Ireland currently has more than 1,000 volunteers, who help run the organisation's 48 shops throughout the island, and Oxfam Ireland hopes to recruit new volunteers in 2010. Oxfam Ireland has two shops in Cork City, a dedicated Fair Trade shop and a donations shop.

The Fair Trade shop is currently fully stocked with volunteers and they are doing fantastic work in the shop and in supporting Oxfam Ireland with their generous donation of their time and effort.

The Oxfam Ireland Cork donation shop, located at 10 Cook Street needs extra volunteer staff urgently. Volunteers at the shop are really helping Pauline Wade, shop manager, according to Pauline, "The volunteer staff we have are excellent, but we could use more committed volunteers at the shop.

We would be delighted to hear from anyone looking to volunteer in the shop."

Different people are motivated to volunteer with Oxfam for different reasons:

Students - course placement or work experience.

Between jobs - a couple of months to spare while looking for work, or before starting a new job.

Retirement - making good use of years of expertise.

Spare time - a few hours a week to get involved in something different and rewarding.
Make new friends while helping out a good a cause like Oxfam at the same time.

Oxfam Ireland would like to take this opportunity to thank all its volunteers in Cork, without whom our stores could not exist. Their generosity contributes greatly to the success of the organisation and helps it to deliver real change to the lives of people in developing countries.

If you choose to volunteer for 4 hours with Oxfam Ireland it is the equivalent of paying for seeds for two families in Malawi to grow enough food for a year.

Anyone in Cork interested in volunteering in the Cork donations shop can contact Pauline on (021) 427 5490 or simply call in to the shop.

If you cannot give any time to volunteer why note have a clear out and donate your goods to our Cork donated store in Cook Street, for example a donation of 5 good quality books = schoolbooks for one Tanzanian child for an entire year, alternatively why not purchase a truly unique gift at Oxfam's Fair Trade store on French Church Street.
