The arts companies at Cork's Civic Trust House have been working hard against the recession trends in recent months putting into action a number of creative and fun ideas.

Aimed at the Christmas market, Culture Vouchers are gift vouchers that can be used with all of the arts companies based in the "dolls' house" on Pope's Quay. The voucher can be used to buy tickets for any of hundreds of festival events, workshops, training courses & publications organised at the house.

Vouchers can be made to any value and each one comes presented with a limited edition calendar designed by artist Robin Foley of Sponge Design which shows what's planned and when. Voucher holders can sign up for newsletters and, as a special bonus, even VIP invite lists - perfect for Culture Vultures! Vouchers are on sale at Blackrock Castle Observatory's Cosmic Christmas and from Civic Trust House on Pope's Quay.

Corcadorca's Pat Kiernan was the instigator of a highly successful 'flashmob' which took place on November 14th to highlight the need to retain arts funding in the face of national budget cutbacks. Supporting the National Campaign for the Arts drive, over 700 people gathered in Patrick's Street to perform a choreographed dance to ELO's Mr. Blue Sky, bringing the city centre to a standstill. Check it out on youtube where the official video has received over 45,000 views so far.

Meanwhile Cork Midsummer Festival is running a series of 'midwinter events'. The next is The Big Lebowski Experience at the Crane Lane Theatre on Wednesday 9th December at 7.30pm.

The arts companies at Civic Trust House are also actively involved in rallying the city's arts sector to form a network which can work on behalf of the sector and enable artists and companies to support each other. This is emerging in response to needs identified through the National Campaign for the Arts drive in Cork and will be geared towards making the best of the recession.
