Derval Bags a Silver

A Cork beour has bagged a silver medal at the European Athletic Championships in Gothenborg this evening. Current World Indoor Gold Medalist and Cork legend in the making Derval O'Rourke came a close second in the 100 metre hurdles final with the host nation's Susanna Kallur of Sweden winning by a small margin despite the home crowd advantage.

Pure Cork buzz

It first looked like Derval may have come third as German Kirsten Bolm registered an identical time of 12.72 seconds. Following 'wan phone call' to Sweden by his holiness Bishop John Buckley it was decided to immediately award O'Rourke the silver medal jointly with the kraut.

"I have a few well placed friends in the Swedish athletic community", said His grace later in Lennox's on Bandon Road, "many of whom owe me some major favours and that's all I say. God Bless now - half days for everyone". Sound.

Buckley: Intervention

This completes a wonderful 7 days for Cork as senior footballers and hurlers both mashed their opponents in Croke Park last weekend despite the games being played on an ice rink instead of normal turf.

Just when hurlers around the 32 counties thought they might have learned enough about Cork's players to topple the Champions Bainisteoir Allen produced a masterstroke, bringing on the relatively unknown Cathal Naughton who scored 1-1 within moments of his arrival.

Kallur: welcome in Cork anytime for a re-match

Meanwhile Derval O'Rourke will of course be forced to return home via Dublin Airport again to shake hands with the Irish Prime minister and other pro-unity delegates before being given an exit visa to return home to Cork for tea and cake in City Hall....on to Reardons then with the bling I suppose.

Doubtcha Derval girl. We'd like to see that poxy Swede take you on up the Mardyke!
