Exiles' Children Become Model Corkonians

New York based Rebel Óg Sophie St. Leger has been keeping herself up to date on the latest happenings in the 2011 National League as Cork hurlers and footballers both took voluntary losses over the weekend.

Parents Jenny and Jeff St. Leger, a former manager of An Crannóg (now An Bróg) and Klub Kaos in Cork city, has been explaining the low significance of the national league to his beautiful daughter. Born only last October, Sophie has yet to experience a full hurling and football season so is understandable exasperated at the slippage of Cork teams over the last few weeks.

Jeff travelled to New York in the late nineties to help educate badly performing bar staff of New York who were unable to work at the pace required in Cork bars. There he taught colleagues various multi-tasking techniques which allow bar staff to pour two pints, prepare a cocktail and eject a drunken punter all at the same time.

As a Corkman he naturally found himself under siege from waves of gorgeous New York beours in haunts such as Nevada Smiths finally choosing Jenny to be the mother of his off-spring.

Although of Chinese-American extraction (i.e. not from a hurling stronghold), Jenny has certainly not been found wanting when it comes to acknowledging Jeff’s glorious origins.

Falling in love with Cork during her first visit, Jenny cites her love for the simplest of Leeside treats including visits to Seán na mBád’s bar in Ringabella and “pints of Murphs and toasted specials in the Long Valley”. She also cites her fondness for the way Corkonians (correctly) “pronounce three as tree” – a technique, along with the sing-song accent, used by Corkonians abroad to enchant the opposite sex.

Jenny has also conceded to the superiority of Patrick’s Bridge over the Brooklyn Bridge.

As young Sophie is now a fully indoctrinated Rebel Óg she spends every Sunday watching Cork matches and keeping up to date on club games around the county. The photo above was captured when Sophie learned that Mayo had “defeated” Cork in a meaningless league game above in Castlebar.

Parents Jeff and Jenny are finding it tough to explain the lack of significance of the league at this stage and the effect Graham Canty will have on championship performances but Sophie is coming around to the idea that Cork are still in with a chance of doing the double this year.

The Peoples Republic of Cork Quality Control Committee have issued an immediate certificate of approval for Jeff and Jenny’s parenting skills and are currently discussing an educational DVD series which will be sent to all exiled Corkonians with advice on how to maximise the Corkness of their children when living outside the Rebel County including a special section that helps to make sure children have Cork accents.

Thanks to Jenny for getting in touch!
