'Grand Drying There' - Housewife of Year 1989

In the melting warmth of Cork’s current heat wave it has emerged that a record number of washes have been dried in the last week. Describing the current bounce in meteorological fortune as “great for drying”, Glasheen’s Housewife Of The Year 1989 Mary Whooley has spent the last six days belting out the washing.

“It’s unreal really”, said the mother of eighteen, “I can put a full load on the clothes line at nine o’clock in the morning and they’re bone dry by the time I’ve the oxtail soup defrosted for lunch”.

Mary who rose to fame in the late eighties after competition host Gay Byrne described her beef, mash and tinned carrot dish as “not bad at all for something from the country” has been washing everything she can get her hands on while the sun keeps blasting Leeside.

“Most of the year you’d be looking out the window for a break in the weather to get the clothes out for an hour”, she says, “but this drying is unreal really, I’ve even getting up during the night to empty the washing machine”.

Her son, Patrick who has irritable bowel syndrome and is a heavy stout drinker is also happy with the current dry spell.

"I've never seen my underpants drawer so full", said the 38 year old alcoholic, "I never have to worry about shitting myself when I'm out on the gat as there'll always be a clean pair waiting there when I get home".
