20th Jan 2010
Haiti Fundraiser This Friday
Tuesday 19th January 2010
Following the recent devastation in Haiti, Cork businessman Bernard Crowley is organising a benefit gig for the victims of last week's earthquake, this Friday January 22nd. The fundraiser will be held in one of Cork's longest established late night music complexes, Cubins with the event kicking off at 8 p.m.
The acts who have already generously agreed to give their time to take part include The Frank and Walters, Jack L, John Spillane, Ger Wolfe, The Interference, The Naildrivers, Steve Housden from the Little River Band, 2 Time Polka, Gavin Moore, Hot Guitars, Andy Dunne and Ellie O Keeffe with more to be announced.
All proceeds from sales of tickets, priced at €15,
will be going directly to Haven who are continuing the supply of urgently needed
supplies, such as blankets, plastic sheeting, tarpaulins, small generators,
fuel etc, in conjunction with Irish aid agency Goal. Haven is also hoping to
become involved in the rebuilding of more permanent shelter for those most affected
by the earthquake when the emergency situation in Haiti stabilises.
Haiti is particularly close to Bernard's heart as just last October he visited
Haiti, with new NGO Haven, to take part in a house building project:-"Haiti
is an amazing country with a tragic history and crippling poverty. This latest
disaster is another setback in Haiti's efforts to get back on its feet. We all
need to do whatever we can to help the Haitians in their hour of need".
Speaking from Port au Prince, Haven founder and Cork Native
Leslie Buckley said "Walking around downtown morning was unbelievably
eerie. Buildings, which I have seen and visited before, have been reduced to
rubble, barely a couple of feet in height. We know that there are bodies buried
underneath there - and it is heartbreaking."
Tickets can be bought on the door and donations to Haven can be made on line
securely via www.havenpartnership.com,
cheques can be sent to Haven, the Malthouse, Grand Canal Quay, Dublin 2.
