Ode To 'Miley'

When history books are read out loud,
Conor’s reign will make us proud.

After the strike of 08 he inherited a mess,
Which he immediately set about to address.

At last a manager with some guile and wit,
Not some grumbling bungling twit.

He searched the county for men to hire:
Lads with guts and their bellies on fire.

At the time he joined things were looking grim,
The chances of avoiding division 3 looked slim.

He set some goals and the lads responded,
And around this silver fox they bonded.

Within a few months he had outwitted Kerry,
And in ‘09 hopped aboard the division one ferry.

It’s hard to believe how he turned it ‘round,
Division one champs and two Munster crowns.

Who could forget that great day up in Croker?
When the Dubs went down in a last minute choker.

Then into a final with the boys from the Mourne,
No threat from the Kingdom, our eternal thorn.

Down fought bravely but the Rebels won out,
Sam returned back to Cork after a 20 year drought.

He bridged that gap that used ‘make us wince,
And we’ve been eternally grateful ever since.

On that day in twenty-ten,
He restored our pride back to its zen.

For years we struggled with nil to show,
But ‘Miley Byrne’ brought back the glow.

He captured Sam with the boys in red,
Only two years after we thought all was dead.

Canty and Conor, together they walked,
With the cup to South Mall as all of us gawked.

Yes, it was true! There shone Maguire!
With Counihan speaking at the end of a wire.

Always humble and coy every time on TV,
Rarely acknowledging his great footballing CV.

He avoided trouble, did interviews by the book,
We always counted the amount times he said ‘look’!

Now he has decided to put his great reign on the shelf,
And say what you like, his record speaks for itself:

An All-Ireland, three Munsters and an amazing league treble,
Counihan, you’re one of a true breed of Rebel.

(And that’s before we mention his awards as a player,
If we listed those too we’d have to elect him Lord Mayor.)

On behalf of this grateful red and white nation,
Thanks for your time and your fierce dedication.

Well Holy God!
