The Real Trash Talkers

The Real Trash Talkers

When you read something that's so blatantly concocted just to get up the noses of Corkonians it's sometimes even hard to know where to begin a counter argument such is the distortion of facts.

At least this Eamon recognises a sporting legend when he sees one.

Reading Eamon Sweeny's bitchy piece entitled 'Corcoran Joins Trash Talkers' in the Sunday Independent last weekend one would think that the author was trying to follow up on his 1996 Fish Short Story success rather than writing a credible non-fiction piece about something so real as the greatness of one of Cork's sporting legends.

The author bears a shocking and cold bitterness towards the Erin's Own man, perhaps wishing to emulate the success-by-controversy method of his journalistic namesake Dunphy who at least recognises a sporting legend when he sees one.

The article starts off with a gem. The writer believes that the respect shown by GAA players to each other after games has suddenly been broken by Brian Corcoran in revealing that Cork had a poster at their training sessions stating Waterford were prone to fighting and bringing other teams down to their own level.

Well, let's reflect on something as recent as this year's Rebel defeat of the Deise when Dan Shanahan made some interesting post-match comments:

"When Cathal Naughton came on the first thing anyone should have done was hit him a dig into the ribs or something" said Waterford's star player. Mmmm'
