THE PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF GERRY MURPHY - A MUSICAL ODYSSEY
The poetry of Gerry Murphy adapted to live music performance plus radio documentary as part of the 2009 Cork Midsummer Festival
Wednesday 24
Saturday 27 June & Preview Tuesday 23 June
The writing of provocative Cork poet Gerry Murphy is set to find a brand new audience next week, moving from page to stage during this years Midsummer Festival as Everyman Palace Theatre presents THE PEOPLES REPUBILC OF GERRY MURPHY - A MUSICAL ODYSSEY!
The poems have
been adapted to a live music performance by a group of musician actors, zapping
Murphys writing into life through voice, music, image and sound. All the
outrageous personas that infamously stalk through Murphys satirical writing
come to life in a riotous fusion of music, poetry and laughter.
The hugely
entertaining writing of Gerry Murphy has been a long time source of inspiration
for award winning audio producer, composer and playwright Roger Gregg. Gregg,
who has been hailed as one of a handful of truly great radio dramatists
by BBC Radio 4, brings the oral tradition of poetry into the digital age. As
well as the live stage show, Gregg has succeeded in lifting Gerry Murphy, one
of Irelands most exciting contemporary voices, off the silence of the
printed page and presenting his work to a global audience in several media of
the digital age.
Led by Gregg, Crazy Dog Audio Theatre first performed THE PEOPLES REPUBILC OF GERRY MURPHY at the Everyman bar during the 2008 Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, which was recorded in eight You Tube videos and has been produced as an Audio CD. A five part radio documentary on Gerry Murphy has also been produced for broadcast on Cork Campus Radio 98.3fm which will air from 12pm each day from Monday 15 - Friday 19 June. Both the You Tube clips of the live performance and the radio documentary are available to download from www.crazydogaudiotheatre.com
A selection of
Gerry Murphys poems have been painted onto the foyer walls at the Everyman
by artist Lisa Zagone, which are available to view for free each day from 10am
8pm.
