Peter Foynes of the Cork Butter Market will conduct an informal walk through the historic birthplace of Mary Harris.
Shandon has a vast array of heritage buildings and history attached to every street. Lying on a steep hill overlooking the City centre and River Lee, it has often been described as the Montmartre of Cork.
It was here that Mary Harris, who went on to be called Mother Jones, was born in July 1837. She was baptised at the local Cathedral on the morning of the 1st August of that year by Fr. John O'Mahony. The baptism font in which she would have been baptised on that morning is still in use and can be seen at the North Cathedral.
Peter Foynes is an expert on the heritage, history and community of Shandon. His publication 'Walking Shandon, a guide to Cork's historic heart' is a classic and very descriptive of this fascinating area.
