New Exhibition Launch: "Cork Voices of the Irish Revolution" at St Peter's, Cork
St Peters Cork is thrilled to announce its new core exhibit “Cork Voices of the Irish Revolution” launching on the 18th of July. This new installation will be one of the largest scale explorations of the revolutionary era narrated through the echoes of the those who lived through it. “Cork Voices of the Irish Revolution” will elucidate the events which have shaped our modern city and nation, guided through interviews, quotes and tales from figures both instrumental and observing. This exhibit will underpin the facts and footnotes through the human accounts and experiences of Cork from 1912 – 1923
“Cork Voices of the Irish Revolution” is written and curated by long-time collaborator and prolific historian Gerry White in conjunction with Cork Public Museum and UCC. Cork Voices is the natural culmination point of the various exhibits and installations from the Decade of Commemorations in St Peters; following key events from brewing tensions with the Home Rule movement and
the formation of the Irish Volunteers to the death of Corks own, Michael Collins and the cessation of the Irish Civil War. This installation details the events as seen by the eyes of the people who lived it; illustrated by their words and made real by the emotions captured in their testimony. The sentiments and experience of a generation so influential to the nation rekindled for their inheritors via the curation and historical preservation work conducted by Gerry White and collaborators.
Visitors are invited to engage with the various narratives of the revolution via study of letters, notes, personal accounts and photographs offering a new degree of insight into the states birth story. “Cork Voices” promises the public an unprecedented level of granularity via the emotional realities that are bequeathed through such personal testimonies in an engaging and accessible format for all. This installation aims to be a resource and experience for all; whether they be new to this period of Irish history or an enthusiast. This exhibit strives to shed light on some of the lesser sung characters of the revolution whilst remaining an encompassing investigation of the totality of the modern Iliad. “Cork Voices of the Irish Revolution” will remain on show at St Peters from July through the remainder of 2024 and will serve as a valuable resource to the students, visitors to the city, budding historians, enthusiasts and novices alike.
