The Spirit of Mother Jones Festival celebrates the life of Mary Harris who was born on the northside of Cork City in July 1837, emigrated after the Great Famine to Canada and went on to become known as Mother Jones due to her support for the miners and trade unions in America.
This festival takes place in the Shandon Historic Quarter among the streets where Mary was born and played as a young girl. Mother Jones was called "the most dangerous woman in America".
Mary lost her husband George Jones and four young children in a yellow fever epidemic in Memphis in 1867 but survived and remains the inspiration to millions of workers and trade unionists and lovers of social justice world wide. She died at the age of 93 and is buried at Mt. Olive, Illinois.
This festival celebrate her life with talks on issues relating to history, heritage, social justice and human rights, as well as union and environmental issues.
It features music, songs, dancing, documentaries and walks and plenty talk and discussions. It is a free festival, just come along.
