Some people just want to shill on behalf of the government as much as they can. No matter what screwups the government make, "you don't understand the intricacies of government - they're all very intelligent people doing an admirable job and how very dare you find fault you complete and utter ingrate"

The deposit return scheme aims to increase the recycling of single-use plastics, which are often used on the go and not brought home to recycle.

“Currently, approximately 40 per cent of drinks containers – around 800 million – are not being recycled,” he explains. “Ireland needs to achieve the EU separate recycling targets of 77 per cent by 2025, and 90 per cent by 2029, and deposit return is a proven successful solution to achieving these targets.”

“A couple of things were happening with these plastics – to start, littering, so the plastic ends up on the streets, then in waterways and sea,”“Something needed to be done to reduce the amount of plastic in the water. However, even if people put plastics in the bin, it was getting incinerated.

“The scheme is about driving better recycling and reducing the creation of urgent plastic by introducing a supplementary scheme to the green bins that would drive circularity.”

From 1 February 2024 you will be able to bring back your used plastic drink bottles and aluminium cans with the Re-turn logo through the Deposit Return Scheme. This will reduce litter in our environment and help us increase our recycling rates.

It is estimated that 5 million single-use drinks bottles and cans are consumed every day in Ireland. Drinks containers are typically consumed 'on the go' and are often thrown away in mixed waste or litter, instead of being recycled.

At present, our recycling rate for 'on-the-go' bottles is only 23%. We must get this to 90% by 2029 to meet our European recycling targets.

The Deposit Return Scheme will boost the recycling rate for these drinks containers – by charging a small, refundable deposit for each plastic bottle or can. When you return your empty and undamaged bottles or cans you will receive your deposit back in cash or a voucher redeemable for cash at the shop you are returning it to.

Goes back to my point of infrastructure and resources provided in sanitation and cleansing.
Yes bottles might have been thrown in the waste bin but has an City or County Council of Local Authority ever had a recycling bin next to a waste bin?
No, sure that makes too much sense.
Have people taken advantage in the past and would people take advantage if we offered this in the future? Yes and they should be clamped down on but we don't have the resources to do so.
In other EU Countries they have community bins, free recycling collections etc.

As the old saying goes, build it and they will come.

What they have built is just half assed and also used as a revenue generator.

From my time in Australia for example a bottle of Coke was 600ml and the can was 350 or 400ml ( it was bigger than 330ml here from memory) their 'deposit' is included in overall price. From memory I was paying roughly $2.50 for argument sake, lets say $3 for a 600ml bottle, converted that's €1.83.
Bring your bottle to a machine and get 10 cent back from the $3.
In Australia they have recycling bins next to their waste bins as well.
Here we have some of our minerals reaching €3 with the deposit.
If they applied our scheme along with the different taxes in Australia you'd be looking at $6 plus for a bottle of coke.

Volunteer Sound_y and his motley gang of S.F. Community Workers seem to forget that the younger demographic actually care about their future and climate change and the environment etc.

Sound_y telling stories about brave I.R.A. men from 100+ years ago who blew themselves up for Ireland will not get him very far as he bores them to death.
