The balance on Ireland's roads and streets is currently massively skewed towards motorists. Lot of folk on here neither see that reality nor understand the major negative consequences on Ireland's health, wealth, environment and society.

I made the point some months ago on why we followed this planning and development plan since WWII and some fools got their knickers in a twist and nit-picked details.

The simple fact is, that we followed the UK and the USA in how we developed our country since the 1950's. They had a somewhat valid if misguided reason for it, as they had very large automobile industries that employed millions. We had no such industry at that scale. We were then very much an Agrarian society.
So why did we copy that development model? No idea, but I guess people like the freedoms car give us.

But it killed the small towns and villages of rural Ireland as everyone wanted a one-off house on a road a few miles from a town, sure the car would get to where you needed to go....
.... and still, people don't see the issue with this in 2024.

Apparently the latter is the major problem and the motorists are being oppressed.

The idea that the poor motorist is being oppressed is right up there with the biggest bullshit argument that exists out there.

For some reason, Road Safety is now in the realm of the culture wars.
It's the poor plucky motorists vs the Green, Eco warriors who want to take away your rights, inject you with a vaccine of microchips and lock you up in your house under the gaze of Bill Gates and George Soros.

Batshit crazy thinking that is the cornerstone of many talking points here.

It's illegal to walk some parts of the South Ring/South Link
Got caught one night years ago just on grass by the Garage.
About 6 of us going to a buddies house in Ballinlough, said no point in getting 2 taxis so was faster to walk that way and off at the Borreenmanna Slip Road.
Nice summers evening had a few in town was about 11 o clock had just gotten dark tbf.
Guards escorted us off the road and told us not to do it again as it's a illegal to walk a dual carriageway due safety and lack of infrastructure, we pleaded the polite case of there's a grass bank. They weren't having it.
How true or false it is I don't know, but you never see people walking there.
For my buddy it's definitely faster to walk that way but we don't do it anymore as do not want to take the chance of a fine but also because we are rarely in town much. Mainly stay local.

I live in one of the most cyclist friendly cities in the world and there plenty roads here comparable to the South Ring.

You can neither walk nor cycle on these because its a fucking insanely dangerous idea which was not considered at the design stage.

I think that's a healthy culture in Cork city centre.
It's a bit dangerous, would probably be better to pedestrianise more space and create deliberately mixed spaces, but at least roads in Cork are more of a mixed space than in many other cities
